Strategies to combat drought
The Bureau of Meteorology has a drought watch service which sends out alerts if droughts are predicted to occur, this allows farmers and others who will be affected by the drought to prepare.
Land use awareness by carefully planning crop rotation which can help minimize erosion and allow farmers to plant less water dependant crops in drier years.
Rainwater harvesting by collecting rainwater from roofs or other catchments
Cloud seeding can change the amount or type of precipitation that falls from clouds, therefore can help during droughts
Desalination of sea water for irrigation and consumption
Ristrictions on the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere which contributes to global warming. This can be done by using less cars, recycling, turning off heating and air-conditioners and use less electricity.
Recycling water by treating and purifying wastewater (sewage)
Identify limits to systems and management and investigate crop options by preparing an irrigation and drainage management plan
Transvasement by building canals and redirecting rivers as massive attempts at irrigation in drought-prone areas
Desalination of bore water for stock and domestic use- much bore water is usually to high in salt for humans and stock to consume, therefore by desalinating bore water it can be a way to utilise their water resources more efficiently
Water restrictions such as regulating the use of sprinklers, hoses, washing machines, dish washes, showers, toilet flushes and swimming pools
Lectures and classes on drought awareness to students in regions where drought occurs. This could allow the new generation to have a greater understanding of the topic and therefore be able to minimize the effects of drought.
